Gold bars on euro banknotes as gold price slips to $4,129 on ISM inflation signal

Gold slipped back toward $4,129 in Asia on Tuesday after a choppy Monday ended flat near $4,138, as a red-hot inflation signal inside an otherwise soft US services report gave neither bulls nor bears what they wanted. Spot whipsawed between $4,122 and $4,171 on Monday before settling almost exactly where it started, Kitco data showed - and Reuters reports rising Treasury yields and a firmer dollar pressing on Tuesday.

Monday's US ISM Services PMI tells the split story: the headline slipped to 54.9 from 55.4, missing the 55.1 forecast - but the Prices Index surged to 74%, its hottest since July 2022, while employment crept back into expansion at 50.1. Cooling growth with re-accelerating prices is the Fed's worst combination, and exactly why yields refuse to fall far enough to free gold.

26% below the peak - buy or wait?

Zoom out and the damage is stark: gold sits about 26% below its January peak near $5,595. Yet analysts in a Tuesday review argue the headwinds are cyclical, not structural - central banks keep buying, geopolitics simmers, and swelling US deficits keep the debasement bid alive. Gold has held above $4,000 through 5%-plus yields and $100 oil, a resilience Deutsche Bank's Daniel Ghali calls a historic setup, the review noted.

Asia steadies near record local prices

Retail markets barely blinked. India's 24-carat gold held near Rs 1,50,000 per 10 grams across major cities on Tuesday, Latestly reported, while Pakistan's 24K rate ticked up Rs 536 to Rs 437,536 per tola on firm global cues, TechX reported. With FOMC minutes and consumer sentiment still ahead this week, $4,100 below and $4,167 above remain the lines that matter.
