Apple has opened iPhone Duo preorders in Malaysia, pricing its first foldable phone from RM9,499 ahead of deliveries and store availability on 23 October. The launch gives Malaysian buyers a clear choice: pay almost five figures for Apple’s largest iPhone display, or wait to see how the company’s first folding design performs outside a controlled launch.
Preorders began at 8pm MYT on 16 October. Apple lists four storage tiers, from 256GB at RM9,499 to 2TB at RM15,499, in Star White and Night Sky.
iPhone Duo Malaysia Price and Release Date
Apple’s Malaysia store lists the following prices:
- 256GB: RM9,499
- 512GB: RM10,499
- 1TB: RM12,499
- 2TB: RM15,499
Apple says the phone will be available online, through selected carriers and partner stores, and at Apple Store locations from 23 October. Its Malaysian product page also advertises instalment plans and trade-in credit, although the final cost depends on the buyer’s device and payment terms.
The US starting price is $1,999. For Malaysian search and purchase decisions, however, RM9,499 is the relevant entry price.
What Apple Put Inside Its First Foldable iPhone
The official iPhone Duo specifications centre on a 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR display and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Apple says the inner panel is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, while the outer screen offers more than 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area.
Other headline specifications include:
- A20 Pro chip with a seven-core GPU
- 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras
- 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera
- Titanium frame and hinge cover
- Up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display
- Up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display
Apple’s 15 October preorder update also highlights split-screen use, tabletop viewing and camera controls designed around the folding hardware. Those features are the practical argument for the premium: the phone must do more than fold if it is to justify its price.
Why RM9,499 Is the Real iPhone Duo Test
The Duo is not competing only with other foldables. It is competing with premium laptops, tablets and Apple’s own Pro phones for the same consumer budget. At RM9,499 before accessories or AppleCare+, early demand will depend heavily on existing Apple users who value the larger screen and are willing to accept first-generation hardware risk.
The Associated Press reported at the September unveiling that foldables still represented less than 5% of the overall smartphone market, citing CCS Insight. That leaves Apple room to expand the category, but it also shows why the Duo is initially a high-end test rather than a mass-market replacement for the standard iPhone.
Preorder availability alone does not prove broad demand. Apple has not published unit orders, regional allocation or Malaysian sales targets. Shipping estimates can also move because of limited launch inventory, not only stronger-than-expected demand.
What the iPhone Duo Could Mean for Apple’s Supply Chain
A successful launch would add a new premium hardware cycle for Apple and its component suppliers. Folding displays, hinges, titanium structures and more complex assembly can raise selling prices, but they also introduce manufacturing and warranty risks.
That matters for Asian technology markets. BullBuzz recently reported that TSMC’s quarterly profit jumped as advanced-chip demand accelerated. Apple’s A20 Pro is another test of whether premium consumer devices can support that investment cycle beyond data-centre AI.
The launch also arrives after a volatile week for growth shares. Our report on US inflation and renewed rate-hike bets explains why expensive technology stocks remain sensitive to consumer demand, while the Asian chip sell-off showed how quickly sentiment can spread across the supply chain.
What Malaysian Buyers Should Watch Next
- Delivery estimates: whether the 23 October date holds across storage and colour options.
- Durability reviews: independent testing of the hinge, crease and long-term battery performance.
- Carrier plans: whether subsidies or instalments materially reduce the upfront barrier.
- Repair costs: the price of screen and hinge service after the warranty period.
The iPhone Duo gives Apple a credible entry into foldables, but the Malaysian launch is now a commercial test rather than a design presentation. The next useful evidence will be delivery times, independent durability reviews and actual sales—not launch-day attention alone.
